Sameness might be the risk factor hiding in your training log.
A 30-year Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health study of more than 111,000 adults found that how many different types of exercise you do predicts your mortality risk, independent of how much total exercise you're doing.

METHOD How the study was actually built
The data source
- Researchers combined two long-running Harvard cohorts: the Nurses' Health Study (women) and the Health Professionals Follow-Up Study (men, enrolled starting 1986).
- The analytic sample totaled more than 111,000 adults, followed for over 30 years, around 2.5 million person-years of data in total.
- Everyone was free of diabetes, cancer, and cardiovascular, respiratory, or neurological disease at the start of the study, so the results reflect a generally healthy starting population.
- Participants self-reported their physical activity every two years, which is how researchers tracked both total volume and the number of distinct activity types over time.
How "amount" was measured
- Activity was converted into MET-hours per week: a Metabolic Equivalent of Task score that weights an activity by how much energy it burns relative to sitting still.
- For reference, brisk walking sits around 3.5–4.5 METs, meaning it burns roughly four times the energy of resting.
How "variety" was measured
- Variety was defined as the number of distinct activity types a person regularly performed: walking, running, cycling, swimming, tennis, rowing, calisthenics, and resistance training, among others.
- Critically, the researchers statistically adjusted for total activity volume first, then looked at variety on its own. That's what lets them claim variety mattered independently, not just because high-variety people also happened to exercise more.
What else they controlled for
- Age, race/ethnicity, family history of heart attack and cancer, BMI, smoking, alcohol intake, energy intake, diet quality, social integration, baseline hypertension and high cholesterol, and (for women) postmenopausal hormone use.
- The team also used methods designed to guard against reverse causation: the well-known problem of unhealthy people cutting back on exercise before they die, which can artificially inflate the apparent benefit of staying active.
RESULT Does variety really move the number?
- After adjusting for total physical activity, people in the highest-variety group had roughly 19% lower all-cause mortality than those in the lowest-variety group, with comparable reductions across major causes of death.
- When researchers grouped people by both total activity and variety together, those who ranked highest on both measures had about 21% lower mortality than the group that ranked lowest on both.
- The study found no significant interaction between variety and volume: meaning the variety benefit showed up fairly consistently whether someone's total activity level was high or low. Mixing up your movement appears to help at almost any training volume.
- Separately, total activity volume also mattered, but its benefit for cardiovascular, cancer, and respiratory mortality plateaued around 20 MET-hours per week, flattening out faster than some earlier studies suggested.

Why this table matters for the variety argument
- No single activity here comes close to the combined 19–21% reduction associated with variety itself, reinforcing that mixing modalities appears to add something beyond what any one favorite activity delivers on its own.
MECHANISM Why would variety matter, biologically?
- Different activity types stress different systems: walking and jogging emphasize cardiovascular conditioning, resistance training builds and preserves muscle and bone, and racquet sports add coordination and reactive power.
- Independent commentator Anna Whittaker, Professor of Behavioral Medicine at the University of Stirling (not involved in the study), noted that spreading activity across types likely helps because each one triggers different physiological adaptations, and together they cover more of the ground that physical activity guidelines already recommend: moderate-intensity work, resistance training, vigorous effort, flexibility, and recovery.
- Cross-training also spreads mechanical load across different muscle groups and movement patterns, which is a commonly cited reason why varied routines tend to produce fewer repetitive overuse injuries than doing one activity exclusively.
- Corresponding author Yang Hu, a research scientist in Harvard's Department of Nutrition, suggested there may be added health value in rotating between multiple activity types rather than leaning on a single one, even if the exact biological pathway isn't fully mapped out yet.
People naturally gravitate toward different activities as preferences and health change, and there appears to be real value in not putting all your eggs in one exercise basket.

CAVEATS Where this study could mislead you
- Correlation, not causation. This is an observational cohort study. It cannot prove that adding variety directly causes lower mortality, only that the two are strongly and consistently linked, even after heavy statistical adjustment.
- A narrow population. Both cohorts were made up primarily of white health professionals (nurses and health professionals), so findings may not generalize cleanly to more diverse populations, occupations, or income levels.
- Self-reported data. Activity levels were self-reported every two years, which always introduces some risk of recall error or misclassification. This is also the likely explanation for the oddly weak cycling and swimming results.
- Residual confounding is still possible. Even with extensive adjustment, factors like sleep quality, stress, and access to safe places to exercise weren't fully captured; people with more free time and resources may simply have an easier time doing varied activity and living healthier lives generally.
- The "inactive" comparison group wasn't fully sedentary. Because these were health-conscious professional cohorts, even the "lowest activity" group likely wasn't doing zero exercise, which may explain why the plateau effect showed up faster than in some other studies.
TAKEAWAY What to actually do with this
- You probably don't need to add more total training volume once you're already consistent. The mortality benefit of raw volume plateaued around 20 MET-hours per week in this study.
- Instead, consider rotating in activity types you don't currently do: if your week is all lifting, add a walk or a bike ride; if it's all cardio, add resistance training.
- Variety appears to help regardless of how much you already train, so this applies whether you're just getting started or you're already training seriously.
- Treat this as one strong data point in a growing body of longevity research, not a reason to abandon a program you're already getting real results from.
